The Taos Indians lived in the
Taos valley long before Columbus discovered America. Ancient ruins in
the Taos Valley indicate that the Taos Indians have lived here since nearly
1000 years ago. The main part of the present buildings were most likely
constructed between 1000 and 1450 A.D. The buildings appear the same today
as when the first Spanish explorers arrived in Northern New Mexico in
1540. It is likely that the Pueblo was one of the fabled golden cities
of Cibola. The Pueblo is considered to be one of the oldest continuously
inhabited communities in the United States.
The Pueblo is open to visitors daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except during tribal rituals.
The Taos Pueblo Indians are especially well known for their sparkling mica-flecked
pottery, paintings, silver jewelry, moccasins, boots and
drums. |
