The Picuris Pueblo Indians migrated
to their current location 750 years ago from a larger pueblo in the Pot
Creek area. Don Juan de OÑate, the Spanish explorer, called the
pueblo the "Grande Pueblo de Picuris" over 400 years ago. It is the smallest
of the pueblos in New Mexico and it is nestled high up in the mountains,
in a sheltered gorgeous valley of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The Pueblo is open to visitors daily, except
during tribal rituals.
The Picuris Pueblo Indians are especially well
known for their hand-coiled, sparkling mica-flecked
pottery and paintings. |
